Welcome to the gear page! Everything listed here is gear that I currently own and use. The A7RV, 50mm, and 70-200 get the most use. Every item has its place, but if you only care about what I’d save in a house fire, that’s it.
Sony A7 IV
This camera is kind of like my first child. It was my gateway drug into the world of full frame and my first Sony camera. I loved it. I still love it! It’s a great all around camera, and it has served me incredibly well. About half of the shots you can see here on my site were taken with this camera.
Sony A7RV
My main camera. If the A7 IV was the gateway drug, the A7RV is the drug they really created the D.A.R.E program to scare kids away from. This camera will take all of your money, and you’ll be happy about it. It’s an amazing camera, it does everything.
It’s expensive.
Sony 20mm 1.8 G
A great lens! Not too wide, but wide enough. It’s a very high quality lens at a less than insane price point. It’s pretty lightweight as well, and sometimes I bring it along just because I can.
Sony 35mm 1.4 GM
This lens and the 50mm have tied for the title of “Swiss army knife” in my kit. If I go out not quite sure what I want to get shots of, I just pick one and call it a day. The 35mm focal length gives a very natural representation of a scene, and this lens renders shots in a way that I can only describe as exceedingly pleasing.
Sony 50mm 1.4 GM
My baby. My love. The most perfect, beautiful, wonderful combination of metal and glass to grace the earth since Galileo’s telescope. I love this lens, and If I could only have one, this would be it. This is the rare case in which I will fully agree with a person saying “Wow, your (insert piece of gear) takes such good photos!”.
Yes. Yes it does.
Sony 85mm 1.8 FE
The portrait lens. This lens really is a great deal. It’s cheap, pretty light, and it can keep up well despite its age. It’s a cheaper build than the G and GM lenses, but it’s surprisingly rugged. If you want a lens to shoot portraits with on a budget, this would be one of my top recommendations for Sony shooters.
Sony FE 70-200MM f/2.8 GM OSS II
That’s a long name, and it’s a long lens. I love this thing, it’s wildly versatile and optically incredible. It covers that wonderful 70-200 zoom range that can feasibly shoot anything from portraits to sports if you try hard enough. It’s light for what it is, and honestly, it just feels cool to hold. It makes me feel like a real photographer. 10/10.
Sony FE 200-600MM f/5.6-6.3 G OSS
Another long name for an even longer lens. This thing is a weapon, I’m surprised it even fits on this webpage. Weighing almost five pounds and measuring 12.5 inches long, you really need a gym membership if you want to shoot for extended periods with this lens. Or a mono pod.
It’s a great lens for sports and wildlife photography, but good luck shopping for bags that’ll accommodate it.
Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II
This is the newest lens in my kit and has by far had the least usage. It’s another optically excellent example, and once again not so heavy that you’ll avoid taking it out. From the time I’ve spent with it so far, it’s a worthy purchase.
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art
A third party lens?! Sounds fake, but okay.
This lens is great! 24-70 is a good range, and this lens by sigma is essentially 90% as good as the Sony equivalent for less than half the cost. It’s really hard to argue against that. There is, however, a reason that this is the only lens I bought third party, and that’s that I just don’t care about the 24-70 range. Is it useful? Absolutely… but is it boring? OH my god, yes. Honestly, I just wanted to spend as little as possible on this focal range.
